Shouldn't this article be named Alfonso I of Aragon? Spain, as such, didn't exist when this guy ruled. Or so I thought... --maveric149

Yes, it should be named Alphonso I of Asturies, but that above is the way the history of Spain has been cooked since 1812 and well after the death of Franco in 1975. Among other legendary and ideologic fixations:

Tubal, a descendant of Noah, was the first Spaniard.
The visigoth Ataulf was the first king of Spain.
The kings of Spain are numbered after the ones of Castille, taking precedence over the series of Leon or Aragon.

In fact:

One cannot speak of a Spanish Crown before 1479 (union of the crowns of Isabella of Castille and Ferdinand of Aragon)
And then, there is not a Spanish kingdom before 1715 (Decreto de Nueva Planta by Phillip 5th, that revokes the privileges of the Aragonese kingdoms)
