Shouldn't this article be named Alfonso I of Aragon? Spain, as such, didn't exist when this guy ruled. Or so I thought... --maveric149

Yes, it should be named Alphonso I of Asturies, but that above is the way the history of Spain has been cooked since 1812 and well after the death of Franco in 1975. Among other legendary and ideologic fixations:

  • Tubal, a descendant of Noah, was the first Spaniard.
  • The visigoth Ataulf was the first king of Spain.
  • The kings of Spain are numbered after the ones of Castille, taking precedence over the series of Leon or Aragon.

In fact:

  • One cannot speak of a Spanish Crown before 1479 (union of the crowns of Isabella of Castille and Ferdinand of Aragon)
  • And then, there is not a Spanish kingdom before 1715 (Decreto de Nueva Planta by Phillip 5th, that revokes the privileges of the Aragonese kingdoms)

What the heck is Asturies? Could you possibly mean AsturiAs? -- Zoe
